Emergency Care
True orthodontic emergencies are rare, but we’re here for you. If you experience severe pain or a problematic appliance that you can’t manage, call our office immediately to schedule an appointment.
Temporary Solutions:
- Loose pieces: Place any removable loose parts in a plastic bag and bring them to your next appointment.
- Poking braces: Apply soft wax to the area causing discomfort.
- Shifted wire: Use needle-nosed pliers to gently move the wire back into place.
GENERAL SORENESS
Expect some soreness when you first get your braces. Stick to a soft diet and rinse with warm saltwater. If necessary, take Acetaminophen. Avoid Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and Naproxen Sodium, as they may slow tooth movement.
Headgear Discomfort
Ensure you’re wearing the headgear as instructed. If the facebow is bent, call our office for help. Discomfort typically decreases with consistent use.
LOOSE APPLIANCE
Use wax to cover any part of the appliance causing irritation.
LOOSE BRACKET
If still attached to the wire, leave it in place and use wax for comfort. If it can be removed easily, save it for your next appointment.
LOOSE WIRE
Use tweezers or floss to reposition the wire. If this isn’t possible, clip the wire behind the last secure tooth with fingernail clippers and cover the end with wax.
POKING WIRE
Push the poking wire down with a pencil eraser or cover it with wax.
